Should You Include Yogurt in Your Healthy Foods List?

Is yogurt really healthy for you?

A very common question asked by a lot of people these days: is yogurt healthy for you? If you still don’t have yogurt in your list of healthy foods, please know that it should be included.

The type of yogurt does not matter. Either it is natural, greek, sweetened or low fat, yogurt is a very nutritional snack. It is full of calcium (1 cup contains about half of daily requirement), a great source of protein as well as B group vitamins and minerals (potassium, phosphorus, magnesium).

Yogurt is a sour milk product, which is formed from bacteria (Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus) during fermentation of milk. These bacteria, also known as probiotics, determine a lot of good sour milk features like its’ unique taste and texture. Probiotics help to digest milk sugar (lactose) therefore it can be used by people who are lactose intolerant.

Studies show that probiotics ingested with yogurt can help alleviate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Members of the study were regularly given yogurt with Bifidobacterium and 3 weeks later they ended up with reduced gas and bloating and their overall bowl functions have improved a lot. This is a clear proof that yogurt is good for you.

Another study exposed healthy yogurt features for digestive system. Members of the study who had no digestive problems said that regular intake of yogurt have improved their wellbeing.

Yogurt can help you improve your immune system health. Probiotics decrease inflammation, eases and shortens cold symptoms.

If you want the best effect, choose greek yogurt. It has more than double protein which is essential not only because of nutrition and energy.  Protein is important for our bodies for several reasons: catalytic, structural, transport, protective, hormonal, regulatory. Studies have shown that protein is essential for weight loss – enough protein helps to balance appetite.

It has been proven that greek yogurt makes you feel full longer than regular yogurts with less protein. One of the studies explain that people who use yogurt as an evening snack are likely to consume 100 calories less than people who choose another type of snack (even if it has the same amount of calories as yogurt).

Yogurt has unique features that help prevent osteoporosis. Studies show that people who consume 3 types of foods with protein (including yogurt) contributes to bone density and strength.

Of course, when asking the question: is yogurt healthy for you, it is essential to know this. Specialist say that there is a universal rule: the best product is with minimal ingredients (no preservatives, flavorings, colorings, starches and other synthetic additives) and no added sugars.
